At 1:100000 a 10 km stage measures 10 cm, so it crosses a page with room to spare. The same route needs 40 cm at 1:25000 — longer than the long edge of an A4 sheet. Every step down the list halves the drawing and doubles the ground you can fit on one sheet.

What does scale 1:100000 mean?

Scale 1:100000 is a ratio. The first number is a distance on the map, the second is the matching distance on the ground. One centimeter on the map stands for 100,000 centimeters in reality, and 100,000 cm is 1,000 m, which is one kilometer. Of all the map scales in common use, this is the one that needs no arithmetic at all: 1 cm is 1 km.

Converting by hand takes one operation. Divide a ground distance by 100,000 to get the length on the map, or multiply a map length by 100,000 to get the ground distance. Scale 1:100000 — frequently asked questions

One centimeter on a 1:100000 map is exactly 1 kilometer on the ground. So 5 cm is 5 km and 12 cm is 12 km. Going the other way, divide the ground distance by 100,000.

A 1:50000 map draws everything twice as large along each edge, so the same sheet holds four times less ground. Use 1:50000 when you walk the terrain and need contour detail, and 1:100000 when you plan a route by car or bike and want the whole region in one view.

Read the length in centimeters and you already have the answer in kilometers. A 7 cm line is 7 km. For a winding road, measure it in short straight sections and add them up, or lay a piece of string along the route and then against the ruler.

It works for driving, long cycling routes, trip planning and any overview of a region. It stops working for walking navigation and for anything that needs individual buildings or plot boundaries: a 100-meter object is 1 mm at this scale, so features that small are drawn as symbols rather than at their true size.
