What does scale 1:72 mean?
Scale 1:72 is a ratio where the first number is the size on the model and the second number is the size in the real world. One unit on the model stands for 72 of the same units at full size, so one inch on the model equals 72 inches — six feet — in reality.
The scale caught on with aircraft modelers because of that six-foot link: before calculators were common, a modeler could measure a wingspan in feet and divide by six to get inches on the model, or use a ruler marked off in sixths. Kit makers such as Skybirds built on this idea in the 1930s, and it has stayed the aircraft-modeling standard ever since.
The scale factor is 1/72, or about 0.0139. To convert by hand, divide the real length by 72 to get the model length, or multiply the model length by 72 to get the real size. The math works in any unit as long as both sides use the same one.
Where is scale 1:72 used?
Scale 1:72 shows up wherever modelers want plenty of choice on the shelf without the bulk of larger kits:
- Aircraft models — the most common scale for military and civilian aircraft kits, from single-seat fighters to four-engine bombers.
- Military figures — soldiers and vehicles at roughly 25 mm tall, popular for large dioramas and wargaming armies.
- Rockets and spacecraft — many space history kits, including NASA rockets, are produced in 1:72.
- Science fiction kits — some Star Trek and other sci-fi ship models use 1:72 alongside other common ratios.
- Cars and armor — a smaller alternative to the 1:48 and 1:35 standards, useful when a collection needs to fit more models in the same space.

- Wingspan — a 36 ft wingspan scales down to 6 in on the model.
- Fuselage — a 48 ft long aircraft comes out at 8 in.
- Soldier — a 6 ft tall figure stands about 1 in high.
- Bomber — a 108 ft wingspan works out to exactly 18 in across.
- Rocket — the 363 ft Saturn V becomes about 60.5 in tall as a model.
