What does scale 1:12 mean?
Scale 1:12 means the model is one twelfth of the real size. The first number is the size on the model, the second is the size in the real world. Every inch on a 1:12 model stands for 12 inches, so one inch on the model equals one foot in reality.
That is why the scale is so popular in the United States. A foot has 12 inches, so converting feet to model inches takes no arithmetic: 8 ft becomes 8 in, 12 ft becomes 12 in. Hobbyists call it "one inch scale" or "one inch to the foot", and most dollhouse furniture and fittings are sold in it.
The scale factor is 1/12, or about 0.0833. To convert by hand, divide the real length by 12 to get the model length, or multiply the model length by 12 to get the real size. In metric units the same rule gives 1 cm on the model for 12 cm in reality. It works in any unit as long as both sides use the same one.
Where is scale 1:12 used?
Scale 1:12 is large enough to show real detail, such as drawer handles, book spines and door hinges, while a whole room still fits on a table:
- Dollhouses and room boxes. It is the standard size for miniature houses, furniture and accessories, so parts from different makers fit together.
- Miniature collecting. Tiny food, books, lamps and tools are made at 1:12, and many hobbyists build scenes such as a shop or a kitchen from them.
- Action figures. Many 6-inch figures are sold as 1:12, since 6 in stands for a person 6 ft tall. Actual figure heights vary by brand and character.
- Model motorcycles and some cars. Motorcycle kits at 1:12 come out around 7 to 8 in long, large enough for engine and frame detail.
- Architectural details. A drawing at 1 in = 1 ft is the same ratio, which is why it appears on wall sections and construction details in US plans.
Examples of scale 1:12 in practice
A few real numbers make the scale easier to picture:
- A room 12 ft by 14 ft is 12 in by 14 in on the model, about the size of a large picture frame.
- An 8 ft ceiling is 8 in high, so a two-storey dollhouse stands a little over 16 in tall.
- A standard 6 ft 8 in door is about 6.7 in high and roughly 3 in wide.
- A queen bed of 60 in by 80 in is 5 in by 6.7 in.
- A 6 ft figure is 6 in tall, and a window 3 ft wide is 3 in wide on the model.
